Dropbox

Watch a Dropbox folder: new 3D files there become models in MeshMarkup, changed files become new versions, and approved versions are copied back.

Point MeshMarkup at the Dropbox folder you already save your exports to. Each hour it looks inside: a new 3D file becomes a new model, and a file you save again becomes the next version of the model it made before. When a client approves a version, MeshMarkup can copy it back into an Approved folder inside the one it watches.

Connect Dropbox

You need to be the studio's owner or an admin.

  1. Click Connect

Open Settings → Integrations and click Connect on the Dropbox card.

  2. Approve MeshMarkup

Dropbox asks you to allow MeshMarkup to access your files. Click Allow. MeshMarkup only ever opens the one folder you choose next.

  3. Choose the folder

Back in MeshMarkup, the card opens Which folder should MeshMarkup watch? Click into folders until you're in the right one; the line underneath says what will be watched.

  4. Choose the project

Pick the project new models go into under New models go into the project.

  5. Choose what else happens

Leave Copy approved versions back ticked to get approved versions in an Approved folder. Tick Also import the files already in the folder only if you want everything that's there now; otherwise just new and changed files come in. Click Save.

The card then says Watching, with the folder and the project.

How files come in

  • GLB files become models (or versions) on their own, within the hour.
  • Every other format (STEP, FBX, OBJ, STL, 3DM, glTF, zip and the rest) is converted in your browser, as every upload is. MeshMarkup fetches it and the Models page shows ready to import: click Import and it's converted in that tab. Not these skips them.
  • A new version or a new model? A file MeshMarkup imported before becomes a new version of the same model when it changes. A new file whose name matches a model in the chosen project (for example gearbox.step and a model called gearbox) becomes a new version of that model too. Anything else is a new model, named after the file.
  • Plan limits apply exactly as they do to uploads. If a limit stops an import, the file waits; nothing is half-imported.
  • Files over 250 MB are skipped: upload those in the app.

Approved versions

When a client signs off a version, MeshMarkup copies it to an Approved folder inside the watched one (making the folder if needed), named like gearbox v3 approved.glb. It's the GLB your client approved.

Change, pause or disconnect

  • Change on the card lets you pick another folder or project. Untick Watch the folder to pause.
  • Disconnect stops watching. Models already imported stay in MeshMarkup, and nothing is deleted from Dropbox.
  • If Dropbox stops accepting the connection, the card says Needs reconnecting. Click Reconnect.

Good to know

  • A file that Dropbox is still syncing from your computer is picked up once the upload finishes.
  • Only files directly in the folder are imported, not those in folders inside it, so the Approved folder never comes back in.
