How to collect client feedback on 3D renders
Collect 3D render feedback as notes pinned to the spot on each render, with arrows and boxes, and the 3D model in the same link for anything a render can't show.
To collect 3D render feedback, put the renders in a MeshMarkup review link and let your client click the spot on each image they want changed; the note is pinned there, and they can draw an arrow, box or highlight with it. The 3D model can sit in the same link, so when a comment is really about the product rather than the picture, the client can turn the model and point at it. Every note, on an image or the model, lands in one list with replies, statuses and a printable report.
This guide is for product visualisation artists and studios sending renders to a brand, marketing or product team.
Send renders for feedback
Open the model, or start an images-only review
If the renders belong to a model you've uploaded, open it from Models. If there's no model to share, drop the renders on the Models page and choose Their own review, no model.
Add the renders
Click Add images at the top of the model page and pick JPG, PNG or WebP files, or a PDF contact sheet. Several at once is fine. If you render in MeshMarkup's Studio, click Add to Images in the render dialog instead.
Check what the client will see
The stage now has a 3D model | Images switch, and a strip of thumbnails along the bottom. Decide whether the client should see the model too; to send only the renders, switch Show the 3D model off in the Share menu before you create the link.
Create a Leave feedback link
Click Share for review, set Ask for feedback by if you want a date, and click Leave feedback. The link is created and copied.
Send it
Paste it to your client, or add their address under Their email to have MeshMarkup send it and remind them until they answer. See feedback-by dates and reminders.
Read the notes as they arrive
Each thumbnail shows how many notes are open on it, and each note says which image it's on. Reply, fix the render and set a status.
What your client does on a render
On the link, your client opens Images (an images-only review opens straight on them) and picks a render from the strip. Then:
- Note: click a spot and type what should change.
- Arrow, Pen, Box, Highlight: draw first, then type the note. The drawing is saved with the note and shows whenever anyone opens it. Undo and Clear sit next to the note box.
- Zoom: scroll, or pinch on a phone, and drag to move around. Useful for checking a label, a seam or a reflection at full size.
Notes are grouped in the list as Notes on the 3D model, then Notes on each image, so a client reviewing twelve renders can see at a glance which ones they've covered. Your client needs no account and can review on a phone. For the full client screen, see what your client sees.
Renders and the model in one link
Render feedback mixes two kinds of comment, and it helps to separate them:
| Comment | It's about | Best answered on |
|---|---|---|
| "The highlight on the cap is blown out" | The picture: lighting, camera, post | The render |
| "Background too dark for the web shop" | The picture | The render |
| "The cap should be 2 mm taller" | The product | The 3D model |
| "What does the back look like?" | The product | The 3D model |
A render only shows the angle you chose. When the comment is about the product, the client can switch to 3D model, turn it to the back, measure a dimension and pin the note on the geometry, with their camera view saved. That keeps product changes off the render list, where they'd otherwise be fixed in post and return in the next render.
If the model isn't ready to show, or the client should never get the 3D, switch Show the 3D model off. The link is marked Images only and the file isn't sent. More on both options in renders, snapshots, images and PDFs.
Making renders in Studio for review
If you don't have a separate rendering pipeline, MeshMarkup's Studio renders in the browser on your own graphics card. You put a material on each part, pick a light set, frame the shot and click Render. When it's done, Add to Images puts the picture next to the model, ready for notes.
- Free: Full HD renders, one angle at a time, with a MeshMarkup mark across the middle of the model.
- Solo and up: up to 4K, Final and Max quality, transparent backgrounds and several angles in one go, with no mark.
For quick angle checks without lighting work, Snapshots on the model page takes views at 1920 × 1080, 1080 × 1350 or 3840 × 2160 (4K on Solo and up) and adds them to Images. Saved snapshot angles can be shot again on the next version, so the client compares like with like.
Compare render revisions
When you've made the changes, upload the new render under the same name. It becomes the image's next revision, Rev B, and open notes stay on it. A Compare with rev A button appears on that image, and both you and your client can slide across to see exactly what changed. Comparing revisions is on Solo and up.
For the model itself, upload the revised file as a new version on the same model, and open notes carry across. How to manage 3D design revisions covers both kinds of revision together.
Track and record the feedback
Notes on images work like notes on the model:
- reply in the thread, or click internal to talk to your team where the client can't see,
- set OPEN, IN PROGRESS, RESOLVED or WON'T FIX; the client sees Working on it and Fixed,
- every note appears on Tasks, alongside notes from your other models,
- email (and, on Solo and up, a Slack channel) tells you when feedback lands.
At the end of the round, Report on the model page saves every note with its thread as a PDF, with internal notes left out. When the renders are final, a Sign it off link (Solo plan and up) lets the client approve them, refused while notes are open. See 3D model approval software.
FAQ
How many renders can I add?
Free takes one image or PDF per model and shows a PDF's first page only. Solo and above take as many images and PDF pages as you need. See pricing.
Can my client leave feedback on a PDF contact sheet?
Yes. Every page of a PDF can take notes and drawings on paid plans; Free shows page one.
Do my client's drawings change my render?
No. Arrows, boxes and highlights are stored with the note and drawn over the image when the note is open. The image file stays as you uploaded it.
