How to share a SketchUp model with a client

The ways to share a SketchUp model with a client who doesn't use SketchUp, from a view-only link to a review link where they pin feedback right on the model.

To share a SketchUp model with a client who doesn't use SketchUp, send a link they open in their browser rather than the .skp file. SketchUp's own Link Sharing gives a view-only link. When you need the client to tell you what to change, export a GLB (FileExport3D Model… in SketchUp 2024 and later), upload it to MeshMarkup and send the review link: the client turns the model round, measures it, and clicks the exact spot each note is about, with no account and nothing to install.

Most clients don't have SketchUp, and an .skp saved in a newer version doesn't always open in an older one. Pictures are easy to send, but the client can only comment on the angles you picked.

SketchUp for Web (and SketchUp for iPad) can make a link to a model. According to SketchUp's help, it's a view-only link: anyone you send it to can look at the model without signing in or installing anything, the model has to be saved to Trimble Connect first, and you can switch the link off at any time. You turn it on from the sharing icon at the top of the window.

That's good for showing a design. In SketchUp's help page we didn't find a way for the person opening the link to leave a comment on the model, so feedback comes back by email or a call ("the bit on the left, near the window"). These details are from SketchUp's help as of November 2026; check there for changes.

  1. Export a GLB

In SketchUp 2024 or later, choose FileExport3D Model… and set the type to **GLTF Binary File (.glb). In older versions, export COLLADA (.dae)*. The settings are in how to export from SketchUp.

  2. Upload it to MeshMarkup

Drop the file on your Models page. A GLB opens as it is, with its materials and textures.

  3. Check the size

Click Measure and measure something you know, such as a door. SketchUp works in inches internally, so it's worth a check. See wrong size or scale.

  4. Set the view they start from (optional)

MeshMarkup doesn't use SketchUp's scenes, so pin your own questions on the model instead ("Is this worktop height right?"), and set the lighting.

  5. Click Share for review and send the link

Choose Leave feedback, pick a date to ask for feedback by, and add their email if you want MeshMarkup to send the link and remind them. See review links and permissions.

  • Turn, zoom and look inside the model in any browser, on a computer, tablet or phone.
  • Measure between two points.
  • Hide or isolate parts, or cut the model open.
  • Click the model to leave a note. The note keeps the angle they were looking from, so you see what they saw.
  • Read your replies and see which notes are resolved.

They don't get your .skp or the GLB: there's no download on a review link.

Several rooms or options

If you're showing several options, or a kitchen, a bathroom and a wardrobe, upload each as its own model in one project and share the whole project. The client gets one link that lists every model. See project review links. Renders and PDF drawings can go in the same link as the model; see review images and PDFs.

After the feedback

Make the changes in SketchUp, export again, and upload onto the same model with Upload v2. Open notes move across with their replies, and Compare shows the previous version as a ghost behind the new one. When the design is agreed, a Sign it off link records who approved which version and when. The Free plan keeps one version per model, and Compare and sign-off come with the Solo, Studio and Pipeline plans; see versions and comparing and client sign-off.
